Ok, first off let me say I am happy that these people are together enough to recognize that this stove needs a new home instead of a trip to the dump, BUT.....I'm so sad they bought this house and it's kitchen with lovely pink counters, birch cabinets, this glorious stove....AND IT'S NOT THEIR STYLE. I guess I just don't get it, why would you buy this house if it's not your style? I bet they are going to to rip that kitchen apart and install some boring HGTV approved greige granite 'decor'. Seriously, aren't there enough newer homes out there for these people to buy so they can stop mauling cool old houses?!!
It's product placement heaven for the Reader's Digest family of magazines. (I guess you are entitled to do that when you finance the film.)
Also, I really love the cute little pink uniforms these checkers are wearing, not the blue one so much though.

I actually took a supermarket checker course at the community college back in 1990 and this is one of the films they showed us.....this one, and a really awesome 60's one about shoplifting, called The Shoplifter. Find it if you can, it's completely worth your time. It's full of hammy acting and it does show the fabulous interiors and merchandise of quite a few types of stores.

Lastly, I don't think we have a Checker of the Year anymore here in the states, but it looks like New Zealand does! :)
Oh maaaan....I miss old style grocery stores. I miss the garish lighting, gaudy colors and the entrance doors with the rickety metal dividers. I miss the pastel produce cases and the real fishnets full of plastic replicas of crabs and swordfish in the meat/seafood department. I miss the shiny vct (most likely asbestos) square tiles, the check cashing/courtesy booth and the cluttery decor. I miss the hand painted signs on white butcher paper and the 'cha-ching' sound the clunky cash registers made. By the time the 70s rolled around and I was was shopping in there, these places were beginning to lose their luster. They were still wonderful, but the lighting was dingy and floors were stained & crumbly in places. the pastel produce cases were out of style in a brown world and the carts were squeaky & had bad wheels. Eventually the clunky cash register would be replaced by the kind that beeped and the front door electronics were failing, making them sticky & hard to open. I didn't care, I loved them just the same. Obviously I still do. I'd give my eye teeth for one more trip to 'Bob's Thrift' on 33rd and Perry to buy a Mad magazine, some 'Grease' bubble gum cards and a package of wax bottle candy. Unfortunately, it will never be possible because Bob's is now a Library.
Since I don't want to disappoint anyone, here are some ugly 1970 dining room sets courtesy of Western Auto.

Again with the hideous colonial/early american ugliness, tho I'm not sure that zestful avocado set is much better.
I'm in the process of stocking this shop, so please check in from time to time and see what's been added.
Early American style furniture. blech! I remember my grandparents having some of this crap (sans the hideous pattern) in their living room. They also had a dining room set.

Why on earth would anyone want reproductions of 'authentic colonial furniture' when there was stylish SPACE AGE MODERN furniture available?!!!!
This is much more like it!
Seriously, It's been a catalog scanning frenzy around here lately....keep on the look out for scans from a couple of lovely Montgomery Ward catalogs from 1941 and a nifty one from 1955. Currently i have some scans from a really nice 1962 Crescent Department Store (Spokane, Wa) Christmas catalog up on flickr for you to check out....CapricornOneVintagehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05209061689038757249noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3906087654284967657.post-69758259527046204452013-06-09T21:22:00.001-07:002013-08-26T13:39:55.201-07:00What's New?

I managed to find some cool items to buy, one of which is right here, a 1970s Lil' Softy advertising doll still in her package. She is currently for sale in my Etsy store.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-5NwvdmXsGSw/Tssfw03ct1I/AAAAAAAAAOI/Q5xMFTqNoPU/s400/soft1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5677666678916036434" />

For those of you who are not familliar with Lil' Softy's magic, or just need a refresher course, here is a youtube video I found. I totally remembered this from my childhood (yes, I'm old...shut up!), but I guess I must have blocked out her creepy Carol Channing like voice. (Feel free to ignore the Dairy Queen commercial that comes after, though it's sort of interesting to watch in it's own weird way.)

CapricornOneVintagehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05209061689038757249noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3906087654284967657.post-16373717754888878532011-09-30T12:59:00.001-07:002011-09-30T13:14:09.751-07:00NO NO NO!<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 364px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-A7gQGQ-Leco/ToYfzukP_SI/AAAAAAAAANg/v1_gugLWGK4/s400/no%2521.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5658244955371470114" />
I'm all for upcycling or reusing vintage items when it's appropriate, but this just seems like wanton destruction........CapricornOneVintagehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05209061689038757249noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3906087654284967657.post-85905508972665899832011-09-29T14:28:00.001-07:002011-09-29T14:34:44.501-07:00Hello There....

1950s hippo greeting card inside, a photo by CapricornOneVintage on Flickr.

OMG! I see I haven't updated this blog for 5 MONTHS. yikes! where does the time go? I'm sorry little blog, I'll try to do better by you....it's just that tumblr came calling and then google+ (so far I've managed to stay away from pinterest, but I don't know for how long) and also I've been busy listing on etsy, running to the post office, scanning pix and sometimes posting them on flickr, updating my facebook page and twitter once in a while. With all that, plus dealing with daily life...my medication makes me sleepy (but I am in remission currently, yeah!) and some of the astrological aspects of the last few months have been less than pleasant....I'll admit it, sometimes I just get overwhelmed and then I become neglectful.....*sigh*

Anyway, I hope all of you are happy, healthy and doing well. Since it's too late to wish you a nice Summer, I'll wish you a nice Fall instead.........
CapricornOneVintagehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05209061689038757249noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3906087654284967657.post-24795473335568678072011-04-24T14:35:00.001-07:002011-04-24T14:58:43.429-07:00What's Up?

1960 mccormick spices schilling food colors vanilla easter ad, a photo by CapricornOneVintage on Flickr.

Happy egg hunting, candy scarfing and cake eating day! This is just like my Great Aunt Hilda used to make, only without the lemons.
Not only did Aunt Hilda live in a time warp, she cooked in a time warp as well. I call it depression era cooking...all sorts of bits and scraps added to things, some leftover and some not. Odd combinations....
She would make stuff like cream of wheat with EGG...oh yuck. I'd always refuse that one, and she would get so mad at me. Sometimes she would put the egg in it and then some CHERRY PIE FILLING or CAKE MIX. I'm not even joking. She was famous for cooking steak and vegetables together in a blackened frying pan on the stovetop. They would come out so rubbery and set off the smoke alarm every time! By far the grossest thing she ever cooked was the salmon loaf.......I used to dread Fridays because being the good Catholic she was, it was fish day...and more often than not that meant salmon loaf. The recipe calls for bread crumbs, but I know she used saltine crackers sometimes. Then it would be sickningly soggy. I don't want to think about what else she might have thrown in there... I used to ask my friends if they had ever eaten salmon loaf and NONE of them had, they hadn't even heard of it. Have you? I wish I hadn't. Well, I would try hard to choke it down and mostly I succeeded until this one time. The last time I ever ate salmon loaf I was about 9 years old. I ate the loaf and then I began to feel woozy. Little did I know I was about to be hit with the worst stomach flu of my young life. I mean I thought I was going to die my stomach hurt so bad. You know, salmon loaf has a hard time sitting well in a healthy stomach, so this time it didn't stand a chance. I won't gross you out with the details, but let's just say that to this day I cannot stand to smell, let alone eat salmon. In fact, I get the jitters just looking at that picture......CapricornOneVintagehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05209061689038757249noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3906087654284967657.post-48801539263355605582011-02-06T23:06:00.001-08:002011-02-07T07:09:33.333-08:00New vintage ad scans on Flickr

1960s princess phone ad
Originally uploaded by CapricornOneVintage
I've just posted quite a few vintage ads on flickr.
